So I went by my favorite LFS today and asked about caribes. They had one like 10" in a tank with a rbps and pirayas for sale, but no juvies. When I inquired if they could get some they said maybe but they'd be like 150.00 a pop for 2" and they don't ship. He also said that the season might already be over this year.

He said that because of declining relations between the US and Venezuela, there are no fish coming out of there. He said that everything that does comes out is going over land by truck to Columbia and then by air to the US. Because of piranha laws, the planes aren't even allowed to land in FL, and it's making it really expensive. Anybody know if that's the case? If so, with this and HR669, are we looking at hard times for piranha keepers? If you got one now you better hang on to it, cause they might not be so easy to find in the future.

Where are all the Ps this season? Thoughts?

I have the same question, normally there should be plenty of juvy caribes around this time of the year. I have checked with some vendors here and all the answers I got are either no we don't have them or maybe we'll get some
hopefully there will be some coming in later on... :(

This is what I got back when I inquired a while ago:"None being collected now and I do not know if they are allowed to be collected and shipped anymore."

NO.....!!!!!! if that is the case then I guess pirayas are the only options i have now :(

Alright well check this out. i did a little research. All you have to do is get an import/export permit ($100 processing fee I believe) and bring them into a "designated" port (Baltimore is one), It's $999 on Continental Airline for round trip air fair from BWI to Caracas, Venezuela. From there we just have to find the caribes, buy some nets, and some crates to ship them home in. Pay the shipping cost. We have to fill out some forms and submit them to an inspection. We could sell 'em for marked up price, make our money back. What do you say? How much are nets? Make some loot...

Also! according to US Fish & Wildlife, apparently you can import you own pet piranhas without an import/export. The license is only for commercial distribution.

Ofcourse we would have to get permission from the Venezuelan government.

Hi

You wouldn't believe this but the guy I bought my P's from actually breeds Caribas as well. I know that breeding caribas is quite hard but this guy asures me he has been able to do so in the past.

He claims that he has been selling hundreds of cariba fry to this other guy who takes them to USA and sells them in there!!!!

But this seaseon I have been in touch with him and despite of their reds having spawned three times his caribas have not so far.

I dont think he is liying to me he is a quite professional fish breeder, and I actually saw his goup of adult piranhas (reds and caribas).

Who knows but this season it seeems there ain't gonna be caribas at all. I wanted to buy some from him but as their fish havent spawned so far I ended up buying my snapper and my three keeled turt.

If the next season this guy's fish spawn I let you know with some picts as well.

Cheers.

ya its been done just really hard

hopefully they will get some soon cuz I did want to pick up a few

But that ain't all the story, here comes the worst:

When I bought my reds I asked for the caribas and he showed me a tank full of fry, caribas fry mixed with reds fry, about 400 baby piranha!!!!!, they were the size of my little finger nail.

He told me that the reds about that size were 70 pesos (about 5 bucks) and the caribas were 80 (6.5 bucks aprox).

But I was dumb enough not to choose a mixed pygo shoal :cry:because since they were so tiny I was afraid I might not be able to keep them alive so I choose some bigger fish but there were juts reds about the size i wanted to....:irked:

I am very pleased with my reds but i would be very happy with a couple of caribas in my shoal...

Here is this guy's info:

If you kinda' understand a little spanish read it...
