Can someone please explain? What are the signs and all. The reason I'm asking is because its been three weeks since I changed the water in my 150 tall tank. Been busy with work and weekend classes. Tank consist of 5 monos, 1 redtail, and 1 pleco. Let's leave the negativity out please.

it starts to smell like rotting fish

Fish die... Signs? Im not sure of all the signs but 1 is your water can become cloudy. Best wat to check is to go out and get a kit.

EDIT:

Also you may want to do that asap.. The bigger the tank the harder to treat.

usually if your overfiltration then you dont need to worry about it.. others sometimes change water after a month.. that if your overfiltration. :P

Fish will breathe heavily. Ammonia burns their gills making them incapable of getting enough oxygen. The ammonia also burns their eyes making their eyes cloudy. Often times they become very listless and then all of the sudden start scratching on the gravel or decor. Ammonia irritates their skin. They stop eating.

The water will smell bad and turn cloudy.

Get a test kit. It'll run you less than $10 and will save your fish.

Do a large water change. 75% or more. This will dilute the existing ammonia. Beef up your filtration. Lessen your waste load. Try and get some bacteria cultures from an established aquarium to seed your tank.

Keep in mind that high ammonia is often followed by high nitrite levels which can be just as deadly. This is serious business. Get on it right away!!
