I see all kind of DIY sumps in here and in most of them it seems the sump is a smaller aquarium. I'm thinking about building a 300+G acrylic tank and a 75G acrylic sump tank at the same time but I'm wondering what else has worked for people as the sump. I see stuff like big rubbermaid totes around 50G, do those work?

I was going to use a rubbermaid bin, but they bow quite badly when filled up with water. You can get something at Home Depot called a "Deck Box" for storing lawn toys and crap in, looks to be around 70-100gal, and quite sturdy.

I just built a 75gallon plywood sump instead of using the rubbermaid bin. I also have some heavy duty ABS tool bins, but they are only 30gal or so, and not a great shape for the setup I wanted.

Plastic 55gal drums would work, if you could make sure they didn't have anything nasty in them. There are also lots of places that make industrial HDPE tanks, that I think would work out really well as a sump. Dr. Joe provided a link before I think... I forget the URL.

Good idea.. that's what I use as well because it's cheap and I already had it.. :)

i used a 40g tuff stuff tub for a sump on a reverse flow system. works great i filled it with lava rock and two stacked flower boxes also filled with lava rocks for water to run through.

That's pretty cool. Yeah I thought the rubbermaids might bow with the water pressure...I'll probably just use an aquarium but just trying to see what else will work.

my first post here.....
yep....55 gallon drums are awesome, i get them free from a friend who makes custom adhesives, i get the ones which stored water based stuff which is easily cleaned before use.
currently i have 2 75gal and a 55 on one of my 55 gallon drums, i'm using 5 gallon buckets to hold my media which is a mix of large gravel and filter floss, then 2 large pumps for the returns, this current 55 gal sump has been operating for about a year and works perfectly....only thing i would change is having the inlets/outlets go through the side near the top to make removing the lid a bit easier.
