I've got an all-glass 300w submersible heater for my 125 in my sump and it won't keep a consistent temperature.

Durring the summer months I had it turned all the way down and it kept it consistently at 82F. Now that it's colder out side it's gone all haywire. I'll get leveled out around 78-80F and then next week it'll be 85F, so I put it down a click and 2 days later it'll be 74F. I have a few other all-glass heaters in a 75 and 50 that have hob and canister filters on them and have no problems with them.

So needless to say I'm getting fed up, so what heaters have you guys had success with in your sumps.

what brand are you using
temp adjustment might not be precise enough on the heater

Your heater might be going bad. I use Ehiem Jager heaters. Thats the only heater that i use now and love them. Havent had one go bad on me yet and they are very accurate. I use two in all my tanks just in case one ever goes bad.

For my 108g, In my sump I use 1x all-glass 150w + 1x 300w titanium on a controler with external probe both set at 82°f. I also keep a second 300w in there set 2° lower in case of emergency and to help recover if I do a BIG water change. One way I found to get a more stable temperature was to put the "Sensor" section/probe on the side of the comming water flow so that the heater was not going on/off all the time & that the heat generated had to go through my tank before getting a water temp readout.

I prefer an external controller. I toss the probe in the tank, turn the heater up to max, and plug it into the controller. I would also prefer 2 heaters. maybe 2x 200s.

I had some titanium heaters with external controllers, but they either stopped working all together or wouldn't turn off, overheating. Are you talking about heaters with built in controllers or are there controllers that you can buy and plug into a heater?

yeah i had those titanium heaters also. they stopped working after a while. so i stopped using them. i just use the ehiem jager heaters now. well alot of heaters have the heat control right on them. some heaters have controllers like what you use to have with your titanium heaters. I dont know of any controllers that you plug in but someone else might.

good call on that one, that's a pretty good deal might have to jump on that. and will probably end up getting 2 for peace of mind

Yeah i set them to what i want and its keeps the tank at that temp. they are very accurate. Iam sure you will like them. Nice auto shut off if they get to hot. Say if you forget to unplug when changing water and they get dry they will shut off before over heating.
