What is a dither fish?

Sorry, I have no clue what a dither fish is, and I hear about them all the time.

like your fish will chase or attack these fish to gt off aggression instead of attacking your other fish

I have been very surprised how well dither fish have been on keeping my African cichlids out and about in the open areas of the tank. (giant danios now and at one time rainbows)
