What is a dither????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
oh man... but to answer your question a dither is a cheap easy to replace target fish that you put in with aggressive often large fish to curb the aggression between the more expensive fish ex: you would put a silver dollar (dither) with a breeding pair of jags for example so that the male doesn't kill the female.

A fish that is put in a breeding tank so that the fish breeding will want to work together and fend for the babies more then trying to fight eachother. They put their attention towards keeping the dither away from the babies

a fish tank stuntman!
like the others said a fish who puts his tail on the line for the greater good.

Well said; I call my Silver Dollars rodeo clowns.

Rodeo clowns; perfect description for dithers haha, awesome stuff. They are also super useful with new cichlids or cichlids kept singly, many (especially young) sa/ca cichlids hide if they are alone in a tank, add other fish and it's an instant change in personality.
