just want some info on what might be a good choice for a cichlid? I got a 125 and would like to throw something in there that gets to be a decent size.

I thought Discus were pretty sensitive to their water conditions?

Yes and know wild caught ones yes but nowadays the home reared ones are tougher than you think they are still a bit touchy if not how about angles they are tough and look nice in a shoal.

i will add though "The key to having a healthy and happy discus is water quality;) "

Honestly, Discus are no where near being a beginner's fish. They are way too sensitive, way too expensive, and require way to acidic water conditions. The majority of fishkeepers would agree that they are more for the advanced hobbyist.

If anything I'd say goldfish are the ultimate beginner's fish. If you are talking about cichlids, I'd say convicts or firemouths or even a species tank full of angels. But since you are asking about a 125, you have alot of options. Just about every CA you can think of besides Umbies, Dovis, and Bay Snooks.

Personally, I think a 125 is a lil bit too impractical for just one fish, so see if you can atleast put a nice pleco and maybe a few cons in there with whatever 12+ inch brute you choose. Good luck.

firemouths, convicts, severums, jack dempseys, texas, green terror, oscars, kirbensis, keyholes, frontosa. with a tank that size there arent many cichlids you cant have.

Personally i would go with a couple of nice Oscars,Hardy and entertaining, they will teach you all you need to know about being a fish keeper.:naughty:

i agree thats a good first

I would get something like said above. Stay away from discus. Something that needs water changes every other day if not everyday is not a good first cichlid.

Oscars are good, GT's are good, JD's are good. I would think you would want a multiple fish tank. Plus these less aggressive fish keep your options for subtracting/trading/adding other fish open a bit. But if you would want solo I might go jag. But keep in mind no other fish will probably ever live with him.
