What is a good price to buy 3" Silver Dat?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the info! Now I know what everybody means when they use those abbreviations "NGT" "AT" "NTT".

This looks like a fish I want to start collecting. I know these fish are all special in their own way, but if you don't mind, since you seem to know alot about them, can you list maybe the order of these fish from "most expensive" or "most rare/sought after" to the "most common" "most affordable"?

Thank you

sure no problem...

The holy grail of Datnoids is the ST or Widebar and this list follows as such..

ST/Widebar is the rarest Dat, and most expensive. 5" fish could easily be 200-300+$

The NGT is 2nd rarest i would have to say and also expensive. 5" fish could easily be from 40$-120+$

The remaining 3 species are all have about the same rarity and cost.

IT/Indo 5" fish could be found from 30$-60$+
AT/Silver 5" fish could be found from 30$-60$+
NTT/ Thinbar 5" fish could be found from 30$-80$+

If you are ever offered a ST tho, be skeptical IT can look very similar... you need a trained eye, and luck deciding!

USe these tail markings for help ID'ing.

Tail markings dont mean anything imo. i've seen plenty of indos with pulcher tail markings and vice versea.

I agree with aquataholic's list, the only thing Id change is I believe IT and NTT are more commonly seen then AT. But that may just be for my area.

I personaly believe the tail markings do have alot to do with the IDing. True there are exceptions for almost every rule but for the most part ST will have 2 bars and IT will have 3 on the tail.

I also have seen ST's with 3 bars, I do not believe I have see an indo with 2 bars though.
I have noticed alot of people lately calling fish I would consider IT's, widebars. It's almost as if they want it to be a ST so bad, that if their IT shows any characteristic that are in any way questionable they automaticaly assume they have a Pulcher. They seem to totaly forget that Indos have the most varying traits.

Anyway, tail bars WILL help with IDing, but just like any visual aid used for IDing, it isn't 100%, but that doesn't mean it shouldnt be used.

SO TRU, watch out buying ST's.

"any fish is only worth what someone is willing to pay":D

And tail markings are good to look at regardless if they arent correct 100% of the time...

Never seen a dat with the tail spots other then a AT.

IT/ST are tricky sometimes...
