I have heard about a quarentine tank for new comers and the sick but don't know anything about the do's and don'ts. please explain it to me .

Its basically tank where you temporarily keep your new or sick fish to let them settle and stabalize. And then u can transfer them to your main tank.

how long should you keep new fish in there? Do you always have one set up or just when you are expecting new fish?

its always a good idea i didnt do it once and lost alot of fish i would highly reccomend it from now all of mine are quaranteened even the feeders are treated for parasites

You use a quarantine tank when 1) Getting new fish and 2) Taking care of sick fish.
When you have a new fish in a quarantine tank you leave it there for at least a week and monitor eating and behavior.
When you have a sick fish you put it there and add medication. Take out the chemical filtration in the filter if you have it.(I don't because it will serve no use to me if I'll have fish in there)

I keep the filter for the quarantine tank on the main tank, that way it's ready to go if anyone gets sick or if I get a new fish.

Its also good to have a quarantine tank setup in case your fish aren't getting along and you need to seperate one. Its just a spare tank so if you have a sick fish you don't have to treat your main tank and possibly kill or cause harm to the fish that aren't sick or can't tolerate the medicine

I never use to believe in quarantine tanks, until I got a bad case of ick in my 125g.
Try heating and medicating that much water... not a fun experience. :irked:

My quarantine tank is a 20g long. It works just fine for Oscar sized fish. I keep a spare penguin 350 sitting idle on that tank and an extra piece of poly fiber in my main tank's filter (Fx5) for seeding purposes.

Just pick up a used 20-30g from your local ads, there a dime a dozen. Stick it in the corner somewhere and your done. :)

I'd due 4 to 6 weeks...the longer the better considering that some of the worst diseases (camallanus for example) might not manifest itself until after the 'recommended' 2 weeks people suggest often
