What is a safe way to vent Jack Dempseys?

I read a thread in the past where some people used a clean wet towel to hold their squirming fish. I've never done this so i don't know how well it works. But you should be able to visually sex a JD without removing it from the tank. Females will have a lot of blue on their gill plates, also known as a beard. Males will only have a few blue pearls in comparison.

Oh I forgot to mention in the thread title that they were EBJD. I'm not quite sure if this one I have is a small male or female. I'll upload pictures in a bit, but it's nearing the 4 inch mark and I have no idea whatsoever

I never really verified this but I've heard time and time again that only males carry the recessive blue gene. This should be very easy to disprove if it's wrong. On the otherhand, if it's correct it makes sexing your fish very easy. :)
