What is it and what does it do? I am considering buying a 180g from a guy and he wants $250 extra for the skimmer. Do I need it? Is it worth $250 used? I'd rather ask here than ask him and have him try to talk me into buying something I don't need.

It allows for the removal of certain types of dissolved organic compounds from the water. I assume your setting up a SW tank correct?!

No. It was a saltwater tank, but I will (if I get it) use it as a freshwater oscar tank.
Could it be used to vac the gravel for my freshwater? I'm not getting enough suction with the siphon to get the job done good.

If its for FW just sell it to someone else their is no use in breaking a perfectly good skimmer and make a siphon when you can buy one or make one for about $5.

no you cant use it to syphon gravel lol-a protein skimmer is used only on salt tanks to remove organic waste from the water-it wont work on a freshwater because of the different salinity. its totally useless for freshwater. dont buy it. to clean your gravel just get a python.

ya keep that $250 and go by a wet vac to clean your gravel...

I have a syphon and it doesn't do the job like I want. I want more pick up with out sucking up all the gravel like a wet/dry vac would. When I was a kid my dad had a powered tank vac that did the job filtered out the crap and pumped clean water back into the tank. Bc it pumped water so fast it would pump the smaller tanks empty before the tank was clean. That's been 15 or 20 years ago. I asked him about it he said he doesn't remember what it was called. Maybe it was just a canister filter set up like a vac but that's not how I remember it.
