what is a sump filter?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A sump filter is basically another smaller tank that is fitted with a pump and baffles etc, then you hide it under the main tank. You now have a huge space to fill up with filter media. Much more than you could fit in a cannister.

It is more complex to set up, you need an overflow fitted to the tank etc.

It is the filter to have if you need the best though.

sump filters are the way to go once you start getting near 100 gallons and above. by having water flow down to another smaller tank below the display you can provide room for a ton of mechanical and chemical filtration as well as a place to put heaters and what ever you could possibly want in a filter system. once set up they are easy to maintain. if you wanted to you could even plumb the sump to to your main plumbing to have a auto top off system.
theres tons of info on this subject in the filtration forums if you look around. these are easy to make on your own if you wanted to.

Sounds like a good deal to me however a lot will depend on the condition.
