what is the air line check valve for on the DIY overflow/siphon?? i mad one for my 10 gal salt tank and it was working well until my GSP got sucked up the pvc and i cut it, got him out, and glued it back. and now it wont keep a siphon and if it does slightly then it trickles out? its glues back together well with no holes. . so whats the deal? do i need the check valve? and whats it for? my design is just like the one on here MFK. it has the u inside the tank then u's over the tank and u's agin at the same level of the u inside the tank and it has a T right above the last U and it was working well b4 my PUFFER fish got sicked up (GSP). HELP my tank is now cycleing with 4lbs of live rock and 10lbs of old rock that someone was giving away that they used like live rock, it also has 20 lbs or about 2.5-3'' os live sand. i mad the sump myself and i used a pwerhead for my water return. should i get a diff water return pump? and what do i use and where do i get one??? i was going to use bio filtration but since i have so much rock and sand i found out i need carbon or protien skimmer so ill be putting carbon in the sump. should it trickle over the carbon or does that matter? PLEASE HELP. . its my first SALT tank and firt time making pverflow and sump. i can put pics up here tmw when im back at home.

The check valve is there to make priming the overflow easier. Without it, you'd pretty much have to submerge the entire overflow rig in water to fill the top loop. Instead, with the check valve, you can just suck the water out of the top loop to fill it with water.

Chances are you have a hole, or your check valve is dead. Check valves tend to die after you've sucked water through them a few times. Try replacing it, but if that doesn't help you will have to check your piping for air leaks. Even a pin hole will stop the DIY overflow from functioning.
