What Is Effect Of Using 10,000K Bulb on freshwater?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have seen them used to spawn spawning in some types of fish (alliteration intended). I can't remember which ones, but I think it was some of the Malawi's that live in the deeper parts of the lake.

I have 2 six-foot VHO's on my 135 (160 watts each, about 27 watts/foot). I used to have one actinic white (about 12,000k) and one actinic (about 14,000k). I recently (yesterday) replaced them with two 10,000K bulbs. The new bulbs show off the fishes' reds and oranges very well. I personally wouldn't go any lower in spectrum, it starts to give a yellowish cast to the tank.

As to algae, 5600K bulbs will cause as much or more algae to grow as 10,000K or higher bulbs.

I like the look of a 10K bulb much more than Colormax or 6700 K.

12-15k halide is the best look....but a 10k wont hurt the tank in anyway
