Hey guys,

I am very bothered by my 17cm Red Tail Silver Arowana's gills as it looks like gill curl.... I don't really get how does gill curl look like, this is a drawn picture of my arowana's gill is that gill curl?

And my arowana is developing dropeye too recently I feed it superworms and ghost shrimps but superworms as staple and it has never had this problem at all....

Thanks

Gill curl is when the softy membrane starts to flare out or in. It can happen for lots of reasons like dirty water, not treating water on water changes, big and quick temp changes on water change.
You can try and treat it by adding a power head to your tank ASAP, if that doesn't work you may need to cut but it's no big deal really.

Also small tanks like 55 gal with a fish in it that can't turn properly and swims backward causes gill curl. Time for you to up grade your tank.

Hey, I read your post earlier and still it doesn't help me. My aro is perfectly fine in that tank he is now 17cm will sell if he gets around 1ft. here is a description of the membrane:
"When he breathes there will be a thin membrane flapping outside its gill plates. When it eats, the membrane will curl"

So does the illustration show that my aro has gill curl?

Thanks

I disagree, you can cut the solid plate horizontally, like relief cuts, over time the plate will heal.

it doesn't sound like your fish has gill curl, the soft membrane sticks out all the time. You fish will look like dumbo. Your illustration doesn't show anything.
And regards you tank it's a definite you fish will surpass 12 inches. Is it an RTG like the one in the thread i posted? Or is it a silver?

its just a silver aro, this red tail stuff is just to rake in more profit form unsuspecting buyers. Anyways, I doubt your aro has gill curl, gill curl is curled outwards, not inwards, also, its permanent, it doesn't flex, what you're referring to is just the aro breating and moving the gill plate. Also, might be a good idea to change up your diet. Add some fish fillet or something, frozen shrimp, scallop, pellets etc etc, even gut loaded super worms for staple isnt all that great of a diet. Also, like classic-chassis said, you're going to need to upgrade very soon if not right now, that 55 gallon tank won't hold your silver aro for long.
