I am new to Convicts. I have 5 convicts in a 20 gallon long tank (3 females and 2 males) for the last 7 days. Here's the problem. The dominant male is beating the heck out of the other male. Two of my females are locking up lips and it looks like they are trying to fight each other. The tank has a good amount of hiding spots. All the convicts are fairly new to each other. Is this normal? What's going on?

this is very normal, you will only have 1 pair of them in a couple of days the others will be killed.

20g is a bit small for all of them to be thinking babies. Try for a touch bigger tank and lots of enclosures.

With what you have currently? Better take out all but 1 couple.

i've heard that a 3 to 2 ratio is good. I'm confused. I do see 1 paired off couple. I'm not sure what's going with the other 3. Are you guys sure that a 20 gallon setup isn't going to work for breeding with 5 convicts?

Are you keeping them well fed?

they are getting flakes and blood worms. over the weekend they ate at least 20 feeder guppies...water parameters are great. Can't this still be a breeding ground?

I think that Convicts get very aggressive when in breeding. The other three will prob pair off into another 1 then eliminate the one thats left over.

The only concern is that you might have 2 pairs at opposite ends of the tank, with babies, fighting hard core.

Try to add more enclosures and see what happens?

Once a pair is formed, take the remaining fish out. No feeders!!!

1 on 1 ratio cons are mean 20 is to small for 5 2 will be fine in there though
