Not sure what kind of fish this even is, he lives in my father's aquarium and has for 2 years without issue. 3 days or so ago I noticed his eye suddenly looking like this. Doesn't look like it was ripped out in an attack to me, what could it be? the same 5 fish have lived in the tank together for at least 1 year with no issues.20130607_223306.jpg20130607_223040.jpg20130607_223008.jpg20130607_222946.jpg

the first photo shows what his other eye (the normal one) looks like.

thanks

Some kind of rainbow fish. Would say its some kind of fungal infection unless there are other symptoms. Also the fish IMO looks quite deformed BUT I don't know everything about rainbow fish, just going off of the pictures I have seen of larger specimens.

What are the water parameters? Any new fish added recently? Any fish missing?

All parameters are good, 0 nitrite, 0 ammonia, under 20 nitrate. no new fish added, all 5 fish have lived together for just over 1 year. I don't think he is deformed, ive seen others like him, its just a strange shaped fish.

It's best to treat in a hospital tank. Use epsom salt 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of water and Maracyn 2. The epsom salt will draw the fliud from behind the eye, this is usualy a symtom of an underlying bacterial infection. Maracyn 2 is a good gram negative antibiotic to treat this with (follow the instructions on the package). Depending on the extent of damage the fish may loose vision in the eye even if the infection is cured but otherwise it will be fine. If you have to treat in the main tank do a large water change before starting treatment.

Aquanero is spot on.

Most likely the fish hit it on something first or it and another fish had a lil tiff and his eye got hurt. Then the secondary infection moves in. Ive seen it happen, and even with rainbow fish.
