Looks like a check valve to me, prevents water from flowing th eopposite direction

Hmm yeah that is odd, double check valve for some reason? I know you need a double check for irriagtion tieing into city water supply.
 
maybe the double check valve is used in case the first check valve fails? Not sure either way but its a possibility...? don't flame me if im wrong, im just throwing it out there lol
 
fpt makes something like this its called a clear union check valve
 
That would make since, it is the reason irragation has to have a double check, incase one fails. And with one being clear it's easier to see if it gunked up with stuff
 
A doubble check valve makes some sense but I'm sure if that was the case they would all be the same type. I think it might be a micron filter, that is if thats the return side of the pump.
