I was at a pet store last night and was looking for some black sand to put in my 2g betta tank, but all they had was "marine sand." What is the difference between "marine sand" and normal sand? Does the marine sand have salt in it or something?

Sand mined from coral rock, and used as a substrate in marine tanks.
Oh, I thought that might be what it was, but I didn't think it would be black if it came from coral.

if it's black it's not coral .......(coral is ALWAYS white) check the ingredients in it, companies name their products all sorts of weird names to get them to sell, wether they are for marine tanks or not

that being said most saltwater sands are calcium based and raise water hardness only they don't have any salt in them

just to put my own 2 cents, lol i have marine sand in my 180g fresh water tank n it sucks. it is to fine n my water was cloudy as S*** for like 3 mnths but the white playground sand i got for my 125g i cleaned once befor putting in and it was clean the whole time no mess. its s0oo hard to find cheap black sand in a big 50lb bag... some one PM me please if they find. thnx

"Marine Sand" has no true definition... so any companty can slap that label on anything they want to...

And do not assume that the material one company labels as "Marine Sand" is the same material a different company labels the same way...
