What is that stuff

that i see at some pet shops? It's usually a small tupperware container filled at least halfway with small clear/white bead looking things. They're in a lot of the tanks at my local petcos.

its just aquarium salt, helps them to sell it. the costomer thinks hey they have stuff in there, i must need it too.

that's a whole lot of aquarium salt! it's about 1 cup in a 20 gal tank

Those cups are in 20 gal tanks...yes but all of those tanks are on a common filter system so the effect is reduced. The main reason for having them in the tanks is to reduce stress and help treat common fish problems.

Cool, thanks for the info. Hadn't occurred to me about the whole shared filter thing.
