What is the best brand of filter?

I am looking for a good filter, for basically a 30 gallon aquarium. I have done a little research on filters, but I am still not sure, what brand of filter is the best. I want one that will last a few years. Please let me know. Please be specific. Example: Ex45 Whisper filter. I prefer a power filter. Also, would it be better to have a filter that does close to the amount of gallons you have, or should I get a filter that does double or triple. I will be doing Mbuna cichlids!

Hagen AquaClear 110, don't consider any other external power-filter been using these for YEARS.

I've tried BioWheels always had cloudy water, Whispers work OK, but last time I tried one (6+ years ago) they were underpowered to me.

I would skip the carbon insert on the AC110, use the foam block in the bottom of the filter and fill the rest with either the bio-inserts (did it) requires 2 packs which = 4 little bags of over-priced ceramic media.

Aquaclears are good filters, if you want an external filter you could try an Eheim 2213. Both these brands have a reputation for lasting a long time, I have seen some 10+ year old examples of both that still operate well.

id use an aquaclear70. on a 30 a AC110 would be pretty powerful. i have a AC70 on my 20g long and at times it has alot of current in the tank.

Howdy,

You are best off learning from MFK experience by reviewing/searching THIS thread. You'll find the name "Eheim" pretty darn often - for a good reason. A bit more cash up front than with other brands, but they will outlast them all. For a 30 gal, you could use a 2215 as standalone. 2217 if you want extra power.

Eheim canister or AquaClear.

Eheim canisters and you will never look back :headbang2
I have Eheims filters still running that are over 20yrs old.
With your tank & fish I would be fitting a 2217

On my 29 gallon I have an Eheim 2213 and it keeps the water crystal clear. No smell at all either. I have about 5 mollies, atleast that many platties, 2 ottos, a pleco and some neon tetras (saved most of these from a friend.. going in the 180 soon) and a weekly water change is all it takes to keep it spotless. I have used AC110 and they work GREAT but I tell ya after having a eheim, I am buying them for life! Well, them and maybe a fx5 :).
