What would be the best choice filter for a 300gal aquarium? What type and if you make a suggestion can you give any possible downfalls/negatives to your suggestion?

yes I agree but make sure when you built it yourself make sure it can hold enough water that comes from the skimmer when your pump is off don't want any flooding.

2x Eheim 2262 or 3x Eheim 2260

a search on the forums will yield you your best result, as this topic is asked and debated several times a week.
short and skinny: Depends on tank, your wants, your needs, your preferances, and your stock levels...
Marineland products (anything but the emporer's)

Also, aquatechs. They suck worse than most other filters.

I personally would run a combo system. Either a wet/dry filter, or a couple of big canister, and then two ac110 filters.

For a tank that big.... i would use a Big wet/dry filtration unit... prolly around at least a 40-50 gallon size sump!

Three stage Oceanclear sealed pressure system with in line heating...1200 gph pump with a switch activated back up... automatic drip RO/DI water changing system and 4 Marineland large commercial bio-wheel returns.
