a sponge is a sponge really just go for the porosity and best fit for whatever you might be putting it on... Which you might want to list for first hand advice

well one is going to go on a powerhead and one will go on a 1inch inlet tube for a sump

I just use aquaclear HOB filter sponges. I cut a hole in the middle and slide it over the intake. Works fine for HOBs, powerheads, and canister intakes.

prettymuch whatever hunk of sponge i have laying around... works like a charm every time..

My fry tanks all use the aquaclear 50 sponges cut to fit. The stuffs durable and can be rinsed hard many many times.
