Want to switch from gravel to sand. What do you guys recommend that I get for freshwater setup. Is just everyday "beach" sand ok? Or is there a commercial brand that is best?

The best sands I would recommend are Pool Filter Sand, 3M colorquarts, or playsand from lowes or home depot. PFS and playsand are the cheapest. PFS and 3M are the easiest to set up. All look fantastic.

I'm not sure which type it is, but I know I've seen people here say to be careful of which kind of sand you get. Some sand is really fine, and gets stirred up easily (and gets into filters, which will ruin HOB filters, not sure about other types but it can't be good).

Others here will be able to tell you which type to avoid.

where do you purchase pool filter sand? Pool supply store? Or would a "mart" store carry such an item? Thanks for all the info!

I purchased mine from a pool supply store, it was $8 for a 50lb bag. I have heard of people getting it at lowes, home depot, and walmart too.
