If you harvested it yourself, take a wire brush to it and scrape all the loose stuff off, including any of the softer wood bits. A pressure washer also works pretty well if you have one.
I have never boiled driftwood and have plenty in my tanks. Where did you get in from to make you think you have to boil it. Over time being submerge and held down by rocks will make it water logged.

I get my driftwood from local lakes and rivers. I do not boil the wood to make it water logged. You boil, bake, or bleach the wood to kill any parasites that may be on or in the wood. I would never trust to put wood in my tanks that I have not personally treated in some way. No mater if I got it from the river or my lfs. I like to gamble but not with my fish tanks.
If you can get access to an autoclave machine, it would be the best (use the "liquid" setting). That's how I sterilize mine...they were way too big to boil or bake.
