We have a 75 gallon at my son's school. It's got algae in the gravel and glass. I'm planning algicide and water changes. Also, maybe some java moss or anacharis to compete with the algae. Other thoughts?

I would use ALGAEFIX by AQUARIUM PHARMACUTICALS - TRY THIS LINK!

*** click on the ALGAEFIX ***
This product is FDA aproved! Do not use algae destroyer!

only run the lights when it is necesary and plants are good but will die w/o stong light. water changes every week are better i avoid using chemicals whenever possible or get some otto cats or a pleco but not the big kind

Yes, I agree with you.

Keep the lights off for most of the day. Add live plants and MAYBE add a fish that is supposed to eat algae...don't be suprised if it does not. Clean the glass often as well. I would avoid putting any chemicals in the tank.

Chemicals probably wont work. Just keep the tank clean, plant some fast gorwing plants and then introduce some SAEs. You can also introduce some duckweed to block out the light if you do intend to turn it on for longer periods.

as stated before keep the lights on only when needed, an the ALGAEFIX or
Maybe a small dose of algae destroyer. I had Algae Issues after I started my 120Gal, an my three Plecos couldnt keep up, I put 1/2 Oz of algae destroyer in an the Algae has halted.

Shadind the tank with pygmy lotus, longleaf pondweed, or dwarf waterlilies, addind vals ans elodea, Making sure you don't overfeed. First do a thorough wipe down of the glass and remove , wash and replace the top 1/2" of your gravel followed by a 30-50% water change. Maybe add some applesnails.
