What is the difference between and algae bloom in the water, and the stuff that grows on the sides of the tank? Are they one in the same or two different types. Also, what is the best way to deal with the kind that grows on the back of the tank? I have a blue background and now have spots that look black growing on it. I am assuming it is just algae growing and should just wipe it off during water change, but thought I would ask the experts.

The type that turns water green is a single celled alga, which generally is a sign of too much light. It can be controlled a number of ways, including micron filters, and diatom filters. Live daphnia cultures, brine shrimp, and even copepods will all eat the algae, and grow quite rapidly.

Spot algae and brown algae are the types that are commonly seen on the glass. Spot algae is common in planted tanks, or tanks with strong lights, and excess nutrients. Brown algae is a sign of either too weak of lighting or silicates in the water. Both of these can be removed with some elbow grease.

A UV light can eliminate 'green water'. I have spot algae on the back of my tank, only in a small area but its hard top get rid of.

I don't have green water, but I definately have alot of brown/black spots growing on the back of the tank, and I can now see a little on the front (although not very bad). Tank has been up for 2 months now and in the last 2 weeks it has gone from some light shadows to a full blown mess. I know that some elbow grease will solve the problem, but I imagine only temporarily. So I was hoping someone could give me some ideas to help fight this stuff and keep my tank maintenance down.
