What is the general rule in measuring a fish?

Sorry if this has been asked before. Is it just the head and body or do you include the tail? Thanks.
 
Both are fine. I usually go by tail length (tip of the nose to end of tail), some do standard length (tip of nose to end of body).
 
Tip of the nose to the end of the tail is how most people measure fish. That's how fish are measured for records and stuff...
 
SL= standard length...tip of the nose to the base of the tail.
TL= total length...tip of the nose to the end of the tail.
Imo SL is just for fish snobs. TL is the way to go.
