the largest known size is a 40"+ polypterus congicus i would say that gallonage doesn't matter as much as the foot print, so IMO a 3.5' depth and 10' length. I am not really sure what size tank it would require as i have not seen the tank it was housed in, but the largest polypterus you usually see around here is about a 25" (give a take or few inches) as the largest, but there are those polys that pop up every once in a while that tend to be larger than most of it's species
yeah, but it's very uncommon for them to reach that size in captivity

I recently saw a big congicus going for 400$ at like 16 in. Dr. B is correct though, ornates and endls are runners up in length (I think, correct me if I'm wrong) if you cant house or afford to house a congicus
