what is the largest species of polypterus?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the largest known size is a 40"+ polypterus congicus i would say that gallonage doesn't matter as much as the foot print, so IMO a 3.5' depth and 10' length. I am not really sure what size tank it would require as i have not seen the tank it was housed in, but the largest polypterus you usually see around here is about a 25" (give a take or few inches) as the largest, but there are those polys that pop up every once in a while that tend to be larger than most of it's species

yeah, but it's very uncommon for them to reach that size in captivity

yeah lol and i think that if you wanted to buy one that size i don't think the price would be your friend

I recently saw a big congicus going for 400$ at like 16 in. Dr. B is correct though, ornates and endls are runners up in length (I think, correct me if I'm wrong) if you cant house or afford to house a congicus

loool that size occurs more often in the wild!!! Never heard of one that big in captivity. The biggest one in MFK I think is Hao's Godzilla which was 25 inches. There might be bigger ones in MFK. not sure.

Width matters more than the depth. I'd say a 8 foot x 2.5 foot width can last it for life.
