Hi.

I am considering designing and building a tank to house a few black stingrays. I don't know what kind yet(if someone could help me with picking i'd appreciate it. Id like one with a real deep black).

I would like to know what the minimum recommended height would be for a close top tank with stingrays. I most likely wont have other fish in the tank.

I have been searching around he web a lot. I have read that height is unimportant. I have also read that 24" or 18" is the minimum. I cant find a definite answer anywhere.

Ideally I would like it to be about 12" for aesthetic reasons but if the rays wont like this i would like to know what the would like.

please let me know and thank you.

before u begin, be aware that fresh water stingrays are illegal in TX..

i would go with a P. Leopoldi

as for the tank,

24'' is the recommended minimum height. however, i have seen very successful setups which are a bit shorter...

the problem i see with having a 12'' high tank is water volume..

basically a 12'' high tank would have 50% less water volume then a 24'' high tank.

what are the dimensions u wish to make ur tank?

I was thinking somewhere in the range of 3x6 to 4x8. if 4x8x1 the total gallons with my plant refuges filter and some other stuff i have planned should be around 400 gal. how many gallons is recommended per black diamond stingray when they are full grown?

There is no gallon to fish ratio for ANY fish. 12" height IMO is just way too low, 24" minimum. How many rays are you planning to keep? Also, is this one of your first rays? Rays are anything but beginner fish, especially with high end rays, one loss takes a big chunk out of your wallet, im talking thousands down the drain. Might be a better idea to just start with something cheaper.

i have had a few tanks. currently i dont have any. I wont be constructing this for 2-3 years but I enjoy designing things. and if i cant afford to loose a fish by then i definitely wont be able to afford to build the tank.

thanks all for the help. i think my questions are answered as of now

Im pretty sure one black diamond pup is going to cost you more than it will to build that tank lol...thats a pretty big loss.
