What is the point/reason behind overflow tanks?

The sump the overflow drains too can hold alot more filter media then a canister or any other type of filter, Alot bigger pumps can be used then any other filter, and heaters and stuff can be put in them so dont have to look crappy in your tank.
thats the long and short of it. the biggest advantages are the increased water volume and the ablilty to but all the filters heaters etc in the sump rather than in the display tank
