I have a penguin 200 right now and i hear this trickling from the bio-wheel. Is there a cheap filter that will last for years that is close to silent. I have already tried the aqua clears and the wispers.

Also are power heads silent?

I didn't know if the fact they were submersible it would block out all the sound.

The Altimate quitest I have seen is the ehime canister filters, where you can place the returns just below water line, you would never now you had them running if you didn't see the water rippling on top.

Eheim canisters are the quietest I have had. Those however can run 100-600 per filter. Next would be a sponge filter (hydro series is the best IMO) and a powerhead. These are effective filters, and very quiet.

I had sponge filters in my bedroom and had to remove them because they were too loud. I switched to aquaclear. Maybe I just had too much air going to the sponges

Penguins are noisy i would get a aquaclear they are cheap and good quality just on occassion they may need the empeller spun by hand on a restart .

Aquaclear is silent if you are vigilant in kepping the water level close to the top.

i love aquaclears..thats all i use
