After being under water for about 24 hours, this white fuzzy stuff began to appear on both pieces of wood in the tank. Anyone know what it is or if it will go away on its own or do I have to do anything to make it go away?

It looks like a fungus to me. I'm not sure if it will go away on its own. You might have to clean it with bleach to get rid of it. How long have you had the driftwood for?

it is algae. how to get rid of it? plecos.ottocinclus'es. they love the stuff.

I have had the wood for two years. It was in my tanks until Feb. and was left to dry until this week. I don't think it is an algae because it was not present on the wood when the wood was dried out and it showed up within 24 hours of being reintroduced to water. It is not spreading, but is not going away either. I may try to wipe it off if it does not start to clear on its own.

yeh it is. it depedns where it is. that algae loves any light. happens to everyone. there is no way to get rid of it other than algae eating fish like bristlesnoses. bleaching it will poison the wood and it will just reappear.

If it is a white fuzzy growth on the wood it is bacterial, and bleach will fix it, along with a good brushing from a wire brush. THIS IS NOT AN ALGAE. Bleaching wood will not 'poison' the wood, but will kill any bacteria near the surface of the wood. Chlorine will evaporate when left out of the water in only a few hours. If you want to avoid this in the future, just boil the wood, bleach it, or get Malaysian driftwood.

It is definately not an algae. It is very white in color and is growing in thickness, but not spreading. Thanks for everyones opinions. I will wipe it off with a wire brush and hope that solves it.

its bacteria.
This happened to my driftwood when i put it in.
It went away in a few days
