What is this guy doing?

Handsome male Betta, very swollen female, half a dozen mini bubble nests, some flirting, no action. Is he distracted by the platy fry in the tank?
Lady B has been trying to engage him, and he'll flare and chase her, but nada. Poor gal! She's ready to blow but he's laying low!

Any suggestions?

Best to spawn them alone. The platy fry are a concern because the male knows it's not safe to rear fry there, so he won't spawn with the female. Feed the play fry to something and give the newlyweds a day alone and see what happens.

Either that, or he's just not into her. You could separate, condition and reintroduce.
 
I know for sure she's into him; she'll find him, stop a few inches away, give a coy little body curl, and wait for him! He will actively seek her out at her favorite spots in the tank and give chase for awhile. He hasn't attacked her, but has nipped a little.
Yet, he always goes back to his favorite spot, surrounded by 7 little guys and an array of nests he keeps well plied with bubbles. Actually, those fry are the only fish in the tank he hasn't shown any aggression towards. I've caught him with his fins draped over them since they were born. *chuckle* maybe he just wants to be a foster dad!
 
Problem solved! Found another slightly smaller and appropriately named female "Violet" to add in and wow! Vi and Lady B quickly established their pecking order, and I guess the girl fight aroused my male. LOL, typical guy. He started beefing up his bubbles and is back to puffing at the ladies. Lady B seems to have gotten the hint as well since she's not bolting away from him, more like a slow little sashé that ends in her curling.
Guess they just needed some competition!

lol until i read this one I was gunna suggest more females
 
He likes both of his ladies! Turns out when little miss Violet gets excited, she's actually striped dark purple and golden beige with violet iridescent fins. (awesome) he still seems to prefer his original old lady, but I don't think he minds the extra attention one bit.
 
Sad to say my handsome man died suddenly last night. There was no visible wounds, nothing enflamed, no bloating, etc.

The ladies have been taking turns swimming around the tank looking for him when they aren't both camping out in "his" corner of the tank. Poor girls :'(
