im guessing its from the male, like a bite mark....and why would ask about sand, completely off topic....

Looks like the male trying to get lucky!!!!

Is the male matured yet??? Looks like the female is not ready to be poked.

I would separated them if this keeps up. You can stress the female out until she can't take it anymore.

What about the sand?

Thanks for the help guys, I figured the male was trying to knock a youngster up! :D

I will separate ASAP if this keeps up, he is almost matured as his claspers are almost fully rolled.

Those are bite marks for sure. I think if he was trying to breed the marks would be a lot worse considering the females size. Make sure you are feeding enough as my rays tend to get more aggressive with less food.

sorry, i have 9 motoro 3 males and 6 females, one of my males alredy get maturity, why the males bit the other males? not the females?? thanks

the males should be biting the females, as this is the only way they can grab onto them while they are trying to stick it in.

not sure why a male would bite another male, unless it was to show dominance in the tank. make sure they have enoug food, as 9 rays in a single tank is pretty intense.

I see bite marks very similar to those on our females, from time to time. As long as your water is clean and they get fed, they heal like magic. I highly doubt that the sand is a factor in that.

We just put our largest female motoro(xmantilla?) into our 600 gallon tank with our Leopoldi/Pearl male. They are mature, and I'm hoping to see more of those bite marks in the future! Good sign, as long as it doesn't get out of hand.

If it gets particularly gruesome, you can separate them for a few weeks until it heals up. From what I gathered from Mike at H20Custom, sometimes certain males can get over-aggressive and need a "time out", of sorts.

it is to show dominance, my male motoro would take chunks out of my male leo, until he started fighting back
