I purchased both fish together on July 26th. The festae had the cyst or whatever it is then, but it was the size of a pinhead then. I didnt notice the grammodes one until 2 days ago...so it happened rather quickly. I purchased other fish at the same time and they dont have anything like this yet.

Can I pull or cut them off?

Ive looked at parasite pictures and didnt really find any that resembled these.

Sorry for all the pics of the same thing, I just saw different things in them that might show someone a view they need to diagnose it.

Thanks!

wierd, but i have no ID for that. sorry

Don't rupture the pus near the gill area. That's bacterial infection and could infect further if not left alone. Try tetracycline as a treatment there but you need to administer it in a hospital tank. That problem usually isolates itself on one fish only so you don't need to involve other fish on it.

As for the other on the fins, yes, it can be trimmed away carefully. Use very sharp scissors to make a rather clean cut and keep the fish in another tank. In there, treat with 0.3% solution of salt and add praziquantel as a precaution for flukes and most flagellates that could infect the wounds.

for the ones on the fins, do you think it might by Lymphocystis? I had a problem with this - - or something like it - - on my Blue Acara when he was a juvie

it was contagious, as he passed it on to a small carpintis that he shared a 10G with at the time . . . I think I treated it with Maracyn or Maracyn 2 and it eventually went away . . . this was a few years ago

If it does feel rather hard, then it's most likely a viral disease or lymphocystis. Viral infections are mostly incurable. This is why I recommended earlier to trim the fins carefully with sharp scissors.

ok. thanks for the help.

Lupin..in your first response, you stated:

"That's bacterial infection and could infect further if not left alone."

did you mean "if left alone?" or were you stating if the cyst thing was busted it could spread so it should be left alone?

I was thinking of cutting it off with razor scissors (surgical) as well...should I not?

I meant not to touch the cyst or do anything about it. If you do, it could infect the fish. Gill area is one of the most critical body functions and should not be hindered by infections that could disrupt its breathing activities.

Cut only the one on the fin. Leave the one on gill area alone.
