My House!
So I was at the gardening store earlier today and asked about duckweed, the lady looked horrified and confused that I actually WANTED duckweed. She said they couldn't sell it to me but she could give me some. She disappeared behind a fence and came back with a snaplock bag full of this

I've never seen duckweed that looks like this (most of what I've seen is tiny green dots) and I can't find anything online about what it could be. Does anyone know what it is, and if its safe for my goldfish? I originally got it for them to eat (I hear they love it) but don't want them to eat it if its guna make them sick. I'm just guna put it in a container of tank water and sit it outside until I know what it is.

Also sorry about the really bad photos, I've only got my phone camera and my hands are shakey. Thanks in advance for any help. :)

I don't know if this picture's any better, it looked clearer to me but my eyesight isn't the best.. I'll keep trying for better ones though. :)1442053241638.jpg

Hello; I do not know what it is, but agree that it does not look like what I know of as duckweed.

I think J joe jaskot was right. It looks almost exactly like the stuff that comes up when I searched azolla. Everything I read said that goldfish might eat it and that it wouldn't hurt them if they did, so I cleaned it off and put it in their tank... They love it! Its been in there for about half an hour, and they've already eaten almost ¼ of what I was given (I was given about three handfuls). One of them would even rather the azulla than her nls thera+a (I put a few pellets in to see if they were just hungry) Its crazy awesome how much they like it.. I think I may have to put half a handful in with my betta so that I can keep a supply of it for them. :D

+1 azolla, which actual species, can't say as there are many. Interesting plant, its a nitrogen fixer and lives with a symbiotic algae; only found on azolla. Kind of reminds the relationship between coral and zooxanthellae.

Its definitely non toxic, in fact its raised as livestock fodder(mainly chicken/goat/cattle)

That's awesome. Is that why it looks like it has little bubble-type-thingys on bits of it? The red bits on it look sort of like little red bubbles.. My goldfish love it though so I doubt it'll get to much of a chance to 'fix' anything but their appetite. :D
