In my pond small fish do not survive. They always die after a few days and look like this. The fins are removed bc i feed them to my lmb. Some i leave the fins on but they still die. Any help? Thanks

If I am reading this correctly, you remove the fins from the fish? Are you surprised that they die and end up looking like this?

Do yo remove the fins after they die? I don't understand.

He removed them AFTER they died hahaha.

Looks like ammonia burn but i'm no expert. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in

Thanks for the clarification. In that case, I would never feed these to any fish I intend on keeping - if they are in fact diseased, it could easily pass into your other fish.

what are the conditions of your pond? ammonia burn makes sense, i would assume the larger fish are more accustomed to the water conditions?

Ive seen bass die from having a bluegill caught in their throat so i cut them off before hand. Sometimes i dont cut them off tho and they still look like that. I'll check the ammonia. If its ammonia how come the bass isnt affected?

maybe theyre used to it since they live in the pond?

like putting a frog in boiling water as opposed to boiling the water with the frog already in it. terrible analogy, but imo it makes sense

in most cases of ammonia burn that i've seen, all fish aren't effected at the same time. Almost always starts with the newest addition or the smallest fish. Simple check though and you can rule that out
