I just caught this fellow the other day while pulling a crankbait from shore looking for bass. Anyone know if this is a mini muskie or a pike? He was in the 20 inch range and wild as hell. Kind of made me look like an idiot when he was on shore, glad nobody was watching. Anybody know how I should have held him? I began carrying needlenoses, lip grips and dykes with me after this guy. I'm not putting my hand in that things gills or mouth. Thanks.

Either way it taught me to be better prepared when I hit the lake. I had always heard that the lake is full of muskie, tiger muskie and other esox fish, just never thought I would catch one. Especially off shore with 15 pound test and a simple stupid straightaway retrieved crankbait. It was very cool and I am happy for the luck, I just feel bad for the rain dance I threw down around it while it was freaking out on the shore. I really would love it if someone with experience could explain to me how to unhook these dudes like I have a pair. Just in case lightning strikes twice.

Never caught one while bank fishing, but I have caught a few muskie while bass and crappie fishing from my boat. When I get these things close to the boat I use my lip gripper to pull them up out of the water a little bit and use my forceps to pop the hook out of their mouth. I have had on one occasion a 3 footer swallow a spinner bait so far down its gullet I could not reach it with my forceps. In that case I wished the fish the best and cut the line. I wouldn't mess around too much with these guys if you don't know what your doing. I've seen guys with some serious scars from trying to wrangle large muskie and even pike.

Thats a spotted musky, there are 3 different patterns for musky, spotted, clear and barred.

im going with spotted muskie to if no tthat it would be a northern pike man and i never caught them on crankbaits on shore hmm i caught pikes on red and white spoons though from daredevil =P

Thank you all for the advice. Something told me not to put my hand near the business end of that guy, I guess that was the right choice. I can imagine a full sized one would have resulted in a touchdown in the the pants. By the way i'm hitting the lake now, hopefully I can pull a few. 9:30pm start for fishing, work tomorrow is going to be awesome. Thanks again.
