What is your biggest pet peeve about your local fish store? What pisses you off the most at your fish store?
For me personally it's a number of things, primarily the following:
1.) When they get in the fish that you want, it is often VERY VERY SMALL and not the size you need it to be plus it is expensive. The flagtail is a good example, been waiting one for a while and then when they get them in, they are 1.5''-2'' and way too small, it's feeders at that size. I was so frustrated and disappointed because I have been waiting flagtails for a while. When they told me that they had flagtails in stock, I was excited because I could get a trio of them, but boy when I got there it was really upsetting, it's never a good thing to leave the fish store upset and disappointed.
2.) When I pick out a specific fish in the aquarium that I want, that's the one I want. Don't give up even if the fish hides under the rock or is hard to catch. Had an employee throw a ***** fit because I refused to accept a redhook silverdollar who wasn't up to my par and refused to catch another one and went to the back. Manager/Owner came back and caught the one I wanted in 1 min, man he is a good fish catcher. He gave me the redhook the guy caught for free so it's a win win. But, YOU ARE PAID by the MINUTE to be catching people fish so you should respect the customers.
3.) When doing trade ins, most of the time, you will not get more than $30... the most common credit are 5, 10, 15, or 20 dollars depending on the fish species and size. but yet they'll turn around and sell it for more than double the credit they gave you, although sometimes, I can understand. Pacu,ID Sharks, and other monster fish are hard to take in and since it says trade ins welcome, they can't turn them away because if they do most likely the owner will write bad review on social media. But luckily, the big fish they get do sell quickly.
4.) INCONSISENT PRICING....
for example, how does a wide bar black bar silver dollar go for $70 while a thin black bar goes for $20
These are the only things that make me frustrated from time to time, but other than that I love all the fish stores in my area. This goes for all the shops in my area not just 1 specific one.

I have a number of peevances as well...
1)The really good ones have closed down.
2)The remaining shops are not very close to me....if I gotta go to a lame shop then it might as well be nearby.
3)employees that don't know one fish from another.

They promise me that they will order me fish and then order the wrong ones.
They almost never carry anything other than community fish, except for the one lfs that I won't go back to because he wouldn't sell me plants to put in an uncycled tank. (and he then gave me a speech about fish care and loyalty to local businesses until I left feeling confident that I will import fish from the moon before I go back to him.)
If I want something, they 100% won't have it in stock. Really, how do you not have any cories, female bettas, female gouramis, synos, swordtails, or nerites in stock? All at once!?!
One of them told me he won't sell me goldfish or SDs because he doesn't want people trading them in when they get to big, yet he was selling little ornates and balas.

I love fish stores don't really have any complaints. For most you can go in and ask if they can get a fish you want. Often place a private order through them. If your a breeder stores are an easy way to let off a lot of your excess fish. Sure $5 store credit isn't much but drop off 100 fry and grab yourself a new fx6 filter. Beats trying to sell them on Craigslist. Usually when there's a monster fish you can assume it's a trade in. That's when the $150 price tag quickly drops to $40 if you talk with the manager. If you know more then the employee it's a great way to bargain. More times then not they get all flustered and run to the back to ask their manager. Managers are the guys you want to talk to at a fish store. Most of these employees are probably just students trying to pay for college after high school cut them a break. Honestly fish stores receive far to many complaints about unknowing employees. Sure it would be nice to have a guy like Oddball Oddball or fugupuff fugupuff running all positions in a store but it's just not probable. I don't see dietitians going into mcdonalds and complaining about how little the employees know about the breakdown of proteins in the body (or do they) but yet we let them get by. Show the same type of attitude towards fish store employees and you will see how much they actually help you out

LOL!....nodody's got time for all of that at McDonalds....Years ago I used to work in a pet store and I learned a lot there by reading the various aquarium and fish books that were on the shelves during the non busy times at the store.I don't expect every employee to be the voracious seeker of knowledge that I was when I was starting out but I do expect for them to at least know which three species of fish are in a particular tank.
When I bought my most recent group of red hooks they were in a tank with two other silver dollar species and when I asked for them by name the attendant netted out one red hook and two other different fish.I then had to instruct her to return them to the tank and point out which fish I wanted.

Wow! That sucks man! I can vouch for the same thing. The one great store we had downsized drastically because the owner's parents (the original owner, run by family great business) decided to sell part of the building to another business, which happens to be a medicinal marijuana shop, but I know a majority of people will fake a disease just to go the marijuana. Another reason I dislike going to this LFS is because of the walks of life you see.... rift rafts, river rats, thugs, etc.... I've never ever done drugs so it's not something I like.
Anyways back on topic, since the downsized, the rare fish and most of the good stuff downsized. It still is a good store, hopefully they move to a bigger shop.

WOW! Cories, bettas, synos, livebearers, and snails are some of the most common stuff in freshwater. They are like staples of the hobby.
Yea, I hear you about them ordering fish and getting the wrong fish. I've had that happen before, back when I was keeping monster fish, I wanted a Tiger shovelnose and got one of those marbled pim/TSN hybrids.
LOL..... no I can't sell you a goldfish or silver dollar because they get so big and I don't want them trade them in, but here you go you can have some bala sharks and ornate bichirs, here while we are at it, take a pacu too.... the guy must have been drunk or just plain retarded and stupid.

You are right. There are a lot of great fish store employees out there, I know many of them in my area. I love my store managers because they care for fish and aren't just in it for the money.

Cool it. I have a great-uncle who can't really practice as a doctor anymore because of his dementia. Without Medical Marijuana he'd be out of a job! (true) ;)

Oh god! Don't even get me going on a silver dollar lecture lol... The fish are so easy to id. Red hook, fish with the red anal fin. But to be fair, some employees don't know about fish, but have good customer service skills to make up for it. At least, the lady was kind enough to catch the right perfect ones for you.
The guy for me threw a sissy fit. Literally forced the bag with the redhook he caught in my hand and said you know what big guy if you think you can do better, go catch it yourself I tried to get the one for you. Redhooks are redhooks, they are the same. Stupid idiot, he just made the list lol.....

She muttered something under her breath but I got what I wanted.....and damn, poor attitude from that guy.

Don't get me wrong, it does wonders to the right people who actually need it.
But in my area (Springfield MASS), we have one of the highest crime rates in the USA, many people here are druggies and thugs...
So I know for a fact many of them going in there, well let's say are fakes.
