What is your all time Favorite Small cichlid(s)?
I am setting up a 40 breeder and I want a solo or breeding pair of cichlids in it. I am looking for 2-8 inch range of cichlid(s) for that tank.

Try a pair of blue acara's those are nice, or even a pair of chocolates. I wanna try to breed my C. Kraussi but they are still growouts

steatocranus tinanti

they are bottom dwellers but awesome little fish..i have a group of 6 in my 40 tall..they are very social little cichlids

Salvini or nicaraguensis. I agree with the cutteri suggestion as well, pretty much any of the Cryptoheros species could work.

steatocranus tinanti

They are an African Congo species correct?

I know they are common but I actually like convicts. The problem is you rarely see high quality ones. Out of the three years I have been back in the hobby constantly looking at fish at tons of stores, I have only seen what I would call a quality fish three times. Bought one of them and it was killed by aggressive tankmates. The other I passed on because it was small and did not have room. The third is one I am raising now. Great looking male with long trailers. These guys are easy to breed but someone needs to breed nice looking ones.

My favorite small fish are Nanoluteus. I kept a pair in a 40 breeder and they spawned regularly for me. They shared the tank with tetras and it was a very interesting, active tank. They do well with live plants if they interest you as well.
