I think I should start with disclaimers. Firstly, I'm not one of those sadists who don't have anything better to do and decide to want to kill a bichir. On the contrary, I'm rather interested to see bichirs being able to recover from ridiculous injuries, as seen from recent threads (broken spines ETC.)
One more thing, I'm not too good at bichirs, so pardon for the very general question and the lack of specifics.

Therefore. What kills a bichir? :screwy:

MAny things can actually cause the death of a bichir..
1- house it with a fish big enough to swallow it.. (many people do make this silly mistake)
2- water parameters..
3- improper acclimating..
4- Choking on food that is too big for the fish..
5- uncovered tank..

Just a few of the possibilities..:)

6- slime suckers (flag tail, plecos, etc) sucking on their slime.
7- tumor in the anus region

Just a few of the possibilities..:)

Many of these are bacterial or accidental in origin. They look pretty godly to me. XD.

The chances of hawks..?? i would say minimal.. i was in africa fishing for them once.. they hardly give away themeselves.. only that fraction of a sec when the come up to get air.. even if a hawk spotted them.. too late to react and catch them.. probably only the small ones that float..

Nah, I mean in captivity. Is that the only few things? Anything else that you guys have faced out of the blue?

Based on personal experience, I would add possible reasons that kill a bichir;

1- house it with a fish big enough to swallow it.. (many people do make this silly mistake)
2- water parameters..
3- improper acclimating..
4- Choking on food that is too big for the fish..
5- uncovered tank..
6- slime suckers (flag tail, plecos, etc) sucking on their slime.
7- tumor in the anus region (clogged anus from undigestion or pebbles)
8- internal bacteria from diseased feeders
9- Overfeeding
10- "Traps" from internal filter(fish get sucked into the power suction of the uncovered power head / sump inlet)
