What kind of algae is this and what do I do about it? It appeared around a week ago. There is also some green discoloration on the sand, but I just did a gravel-vac before I took these pictures and disturbed/burried it all. The tank is a 55 gal with a pair of jewel cichlids and a pair of bristle-nose plecos. It has a cascade canister filter rated for 100 galls (265 gph). I feed mainly hikari with treats of bloodworm, beefheart and veggies. Plants are hornwort, anacharis, banana plant, crypts, java fern, and java moss. This algae seems to especially like the leaves of plants. Its also all over some drift wood. Algae strands are around .5 - 1.0 inches.

PS- i do regular water changes of 15% every 1 to 2 days

haha, whoops. that does make sense. its a homemade canopy with a shop light fixture that fits 2 T8 bulbs. Right now i only have 1 regular T8 bulb from Target in the fixture. The lights are on a timer for 14 hours a day
