i bought them as filament barbs, but i guess they could be mascara barbs... idk just someone please tell me lol

I think Dawkinsia filamentosa, but they are so closely related, it's hard to tell.

Agreed! It's hard to tell the difference between D.filamentosa and D.assimilius when they are not in spawning.
they are about 2.5" now.. one of them is starting to get the filament on his dorsal fin

I just bought a dozen Filaments from The Wet Spot. Apparently they look just like Assimilis. Can you tell which is which, because I sure can't. It should be easier to tell the difference once they are fully grown.

I have six that are about five to six inches long the males get a nice long top dorsal fin when they get big they fight a lot among the males
