I got this little guy from my LFS and they did not know what it was. There appeared to be a female in with it and so they thought maybe it was a return.

The closest thing I could find on-line was a flier but it didn't seem right.

I know it's an African cichlid, but that's all I know.

Thanks,

hmm, when I search either one of these on Google, there is a full range of fish--some which I'm sure are not listed incorrectly. Let me add that he is currently just over 2 in. long.

haplochromis obs are very rare in the wild and thought to be extinct if your lfs is labeling them as hap ob then they are wrong and not very educated your fish is an Astatotilapia latisfasciata and a very bad color morph most of these fish are sold as "flamebacks" and are amazing Tropheus morri get big and very very mean dont be suprised if when it gets big all of your fish are confined to a corner that is why they are housed 10-15 deep to curb aggression

Another thing. Now that I know what it is, I did some research, and since it is a little over 2 " long and no orange or red, etc on it, can I presume it is a female, or is there still time for it to change color?

By the looks of it, it is a female, so the color it has is most likely the color it will keep. ;)
