Original Description: As Lamena nourissati. Allgayer, Robert; 1998; "Descriptions de Lamena nourissati sp.n. genre et espèce nouveaux, endémiques de Madagascar (Teleostei: Etroplina)"; Revue française des Cichlidophiles; (179): pp 7-16.

Etymology: After one of the discoverers of the species for science and hobby, the great french cichlid aquarist Jean Claude Nourissat (1941-2003).

Type locality: Mangarahara River, near Mandritsara, northeastern Madagascar.

Countries: Madagascar (endemic)

Habitat data: It is a small river, rich in rocks. This locality is found near the small city of Mandritsara in the center-east of Madagascar, and just two kilometers from the Ambomboa river, type locality of Paretroplus nourissati. In October of 1999 Patrick de Rham and Jean Claude Nourissat found this river completely dried and dead because of an exceptional drought that extended for the past two years and because of the construction, waters above in 1996, of a dam and a derivation channel for the irrigation of rice fields. The water level had decreased since Patrick and Jean Claude had visited in 1991 and 1992, water at that time was very murky. All the mentioned species could be found at the time of the visits till 1997.

Data: Sonia Guinane / Patrick de Rham

They are not commonly available and listed as a 'vulnerable' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
