What kind of cichlid is this?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looks like a vieja species. I'm thinking Hartwegi maybe? Could be a hybrid as well

I agree, it could be hartwegii, or a hybrid, but when young almost all Vieja look similar (alike), almost generic, so until it puts on some adult colors and traits it will be hard to know, and it's also hard to tell from the photo, because we can't see size, or maturity.
Take this young Vieja breidhori

when mature, it eventually can turn out like this.

Here is another example
below a young V bifasciata

now 6 months to a year later, became the one below

Below a young Vieja-melanura, adults look quite different

He does look a lot like a young Hartwegi...I was looking at some pics online of Herichthys species such as Minckleyi, Deppi, Tepehua, and Teporatus..and think it's possible he is one of those as well. Do you think he is more likely to be Vieja rather than Herichthys? He is one other pic, I can take more in a bit. As far as size and temperament, he is approximately 4-5 inches from mouth to fin tip...and is very aggressive. Kills anything I put in the tank.20191207_084911.jpg

Tetras from the same area of Mexico include Astyanax, Hyphessobrycon, Brycon, Roeboides and Hemigrammus
Below a Roeboides I keep with Panamanian Andinoacara.

Live bearers like Poecilia mollies, and Gambusia are common

There are plenty of other cichlids from the area, but many would depend on the size of your tank, if your tank is 100- 200 gallons, species like
Rocio octofasiata (JDs), Thorichthys like meeki (FMs) or Chuco might work. If it's less than 100 gallons, more cichlids might not be a good idea.
Chuco intermedia below

There are also Gobys like the Eleotris picta below, I keep with the Andinoacara, if your tank is larrge enough.
