Hi, I am relatively new to the hobby of Jardini's. I've owned other fish before and simply used a regular filter for my goldfish. I've looked all over about filters, and have just read that you should "use a good filter" for a Jardini. Now, to be on the safe side I'd like to see what others are using in there system.

Right now, I have the Marineland Penguin 350 for a 46 Gallon Bowfront for a 5" Jardini. I only have the black filter that catches particles, and nothing else, even though it is a 3 stage filter. I also have a bio-wheel. Here's a link: http://www.amazon.com/Marineland-Penguin-BIO-Wheel-Power-Filter/dp/B0009IMDQM

What do you use? Do you put carbon in yours? Do you put those white sticks that help bacteria grow?

I'd really like to learn as much as I can because I feel my tank might need better filtration and I do see small debris flying around the water (though my friend says that's nothing and not to worry about it). I'd prefer a crystal clear tank, but I heard using carbon isn't good for Jardinis too........ so, what do you use, and do you have any recommendations for myself or other Jardini enthusiasts?

1. Bigger tank will be needed for the Jar to live comfortably and for life.
2. Canister filters are good. I love the FX5.
3. DIY sumps are great if you're a DYIer.

Carbon is not needed unless you're using it to remove medications.
For crystal clear water using the HOB filter should be 10x turnover rate and cannisters 4x's.
Water changes alone should clear up the tank. Try your lighting set up. It makes a difference as well.

Hope this helps

i have mine in a 225g with two fluval fx5's and a 305 for surface skimming

both fx5's have the stock sponges and are full of SeaChem Matrix and one liter of SeaChem Purigen.
305 has matrix and bioballs in it along with the stock sponge.

adding a sponge filter attatched to a power head will also help your tank stay clearer. It will keep the particles moving so your HOB filter can pick it up. And the sponge filter will pick up a lot of particles itself.

the best filtration is better a for any kind of arowana. fx5 or sumps will do very well. personally i would go 2 fx5 due to arows needing a very large tank.

i have a 400gal tank, custom wet/dry overflow system with only pillow stuffing for particles and pot scrubbies for bio.

had a 2500gph pump but it blew up after a year and a half lol. now i only have a 1000gph which seems to be doing okay but always more is better

I like the DIY wet/dry filters because they're so flexible and versatile. My jar is in a 300g with a 100g sump, but the same sump also filters a 125.
