i'm not sure if there is a thread of this already. i was wondering what kind of filter to use with a sand bottom. wouldn't the sand do damage to the impeller of a normal filter? i think i read that somewheres. thanks in advance.

sand won't damage the impeller if it can't get to the impeller. put a pre filter like a sponge on your inlet so sand won't pass through.

:iagree:
or just get a wet/dry :grinyes:

Howdy,

If you use a big canister filter with the impeller on top (e.g. Eheim), you will have no problems. The sand will settle on the bottom of the canister and will never make it thru the media, against gravity, to reach the impeller.

Note: On the all-hailed FX5, the impeller seems to be located on the bottom. Although I have yet to see a dissembled unit, I assume that it is prone to damage by sand.

i agree! my xp3 fluval has the impeller all the way to the top. this would greatly reduce any chance of having sand stuck in the impeller. but for some what has the impeller at the bottom. i really don't know but logically it can be costly since gravity is existent.;)

so a couple of fluval 305s will do alright on a 90? since the impeller is at the top?
