coos bay, OR
I caught this out of a local lake on the oregon coast. I thought it might have been an invasive species because ive never seen one.

The only fish that should be in that lake are

rainbow trout
large mouth bass
small mouth bass
catfish
bluegill

this fish was certainly none of those.

this was about a month ago. Ive shown a few people and they didn't know what it was. I threw him back. I shoulda killed it, because i don't think it belonged there, but i didn't because i didn't know for sure

it kinda looks like a northern pikeminnow. It seems as though the state wants to get ride of some of them to control the population, but they are native and not invasive. Here is a link to an interesting site about it http://www.pikeminnow.org/

if you take it to the local fish and game they usually have someone on hand that can id the fish for you and let you know if the fish belongs there or not

you caught a nice picture of this fish. Looks like a pike minnow but could also be a handlful of other minnows such as the peamouth. Based on the flat head and 9 dorsal fin rays I was able to count, more then likely the pike minnow. Nothing wrong with letting it go

As a general rule, you should NEVER keep or kill a fish if your not sure what it is...on a local fishing forum, someone caught and kept a Northern pikeminnow (also called a squawfish, they are considered an endangered species in Colorado) and ended up getting busted because of what he posted on the forum.

I'm sure you ment Colorado Pikeminnow (its the endangered one) a good point though!

Not sure what part of Oregon you are in but it could also be a Umpqua Pikeminnow if the lake is in the Umpqua River basein.

What ever minnow species it was it was the native fish, the fish you listed except for the Rainbow Trout were the invasives. None of these fish are native in Oregon, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Catfish, or Bluegill.

If you came up with that list from a DNR list, remember they only publish the fish they think people want to fish for on their public fishing lists.
